The Golden Horse Awards, popularly known as the Chinese Oscars, are a big deal in Asian cinema. The 55th edition, held in Taiwan last month, saw Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee chairing the executive committee and Memoirs of a Geisha star Gong Li heading the jury. But no award ceremony is complete without a controversy. When 36-year-old director Fu Yue took to the Taipei stage to receive the Best Documentary prize, she announced her hope that Taiwan “can be treated as a truly independent entity. This is my greatest wish as a Taiwanese person.” There was cheering but also visible discomfort among the dignitaries, and the broadcast was brought to an abrupt end on the mainland.

  • a big deal,是件大事。

    It's your deal ,

Would you like to deal (out) the cards?

  • jury,陪审团,什么是陪审团,看英文解释[a group of people who have been chosen to listen to all the facts in a trial in a law court

and to decide if aperson is guilty or not guilty, or if a claim has beenproved]。

什么意思,就是[something that exists apart from other things, havingits own independent

    existence]。

Chinese nationalist netizens quickly vaulted the great firewall of China to express their disapproval of Yue’s comments on Facebook (banned in China) while on stage veteran Chinese actor Tu Men pointedly referred to the island as “Taiwan, China”, Beijing’s preferred formula. The next day, Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen praised the director but on the mainland many called for China to boycott next year’s ceremony.

  • veteran,老手,也就是[a person who has had a lot of

    experience of aparticular activity],也指退伍老兵。

  • boycott,抵制,即[to refuse to buy a product or take part

in an activity as a way of expressing strong disapproval]。

The affair is only the latest upset in a turbulent year for the Chinese film industry. In July, Fan Bingbing, one of the most famous actresses in the country, went missing for three months. Then, later that month, the most expensive film ever made in China, the $113m Asura, an effects-heavy retelling of a traditional Buddhist tale, was yanked from screens after a dismal opening weekend. In Beijing, movie production has stalled since the arrival in March of a new censorship regime — the Film Bureau — to promote “core socialist values”, and a clampdown on tax evasion was introduced in the after math of the Fan affair.

  • turbulent,音是/ˈtɝː.bjə.lənt/,动荡的混乱的,解释为involving a lot of sudden changes, arguments, or violence。

clampdown,取缔、严禁的意思,英文解释为[a sudden action taken by a government or people

in authority to stop or limit a particular activity]。

In October, Fan reappeared, paying a hefty $129m fine for tax evasion. The X-Men: Days of Future Past star grovellingly wrote: “Without the good policies of the Party and the state, without the love and protection of the people, there would be no Fan Bingbing.”

  • hefty,大的、可观的,large in amount, size, force, etc。a hefty bill/fine,巨额账单/罚款。

什么意思呢,to behave with too much respect towards someone to show that you are very eager to please them。

In the past 15 years the film industry, like the Chinese economy as a whole, has been growing at breakneck speed — adding 25 screens a day, according to some estimates. By 2020, the domestic box office is expected to earn an annual revenue of Rmb200bn (approximately £23bn), making it the largest in the world both for audience numbers and money earned. But a Wild West atmosphere has marked these heady days, with film companies springing up overnight, stock market chicanery and a loose interpretation of the tax code. So called “yin yang contracts” for stars and directors are allegedly widespread, with one contract drawn up for the tax man and another for real. Fan’s troubles started when popular television personality Cui Yongyuan leaked a photo of what he alleged was her second contract for the film Cell Phone 2.

  • breakneck,高速而危险的,carelessly fast and dangerous。

  • box office,售票处、卖座,即a measure ofhow popular

and financiallysuccessful a film or actor is。

  • chicanery,欺诈,音/ʃɪˈkeɪ.nɚ.i/。

PYIFF’s artistic director, Marco Mueller, a veteran of the Venice and Locarno festivals, says, “The film industry has run parallel to the Chinese economy and industry, [and] it simply ran too fast.” In his view the Fan case is a warning shot, or, as the Chinese put it, killing the chicken to scare the monkeys.

  • as the Chinese put it,用中国人的话说。

The actress’s largely dormant social media profile sprang to life in the after math of the Golden Horse brouhaha, when she re-posted a Communist Youth League map depicting Taiwan and portions of the contested South China Sea region as part of China with the hashtag “China cannot give up one bit”.

  • sprang to life,突然活跃(忙碌)起来,就是to suddenly

become very active or busy。

The espousal of patriotism and “core socialist values” might aid Fan’s rehabilitation, and a Sky Hunter 2 isn’t out of the question. But will this be the way forward for the film industry as a whole? And how will audiences, increasingly accustomed to foreign films, react if they are fed a steady diet of nationalistic action and twee fantasy? The good news is that, with superstar actors’ wages capped, producers may be better able to fund scriptwriting and development, and create higher-quality films for Chinese audiences.

  • capped, cap,对(收费或花费)定限额,限制,to put a limit on the amount of money that can be charged or spent in

    connection with aparticular activity。
